Henderson County has a unique and interesting history which begins a bit before the War of 1812 and the Blackhawk Indian War of 1832. Abe Lincoln, Peter Cartwright, and Daniel Boone were some of the better known early players in the county. A history of Henderson County video can be viewed at the Horse and Buggy Museum in Biggsville.

The history of Henderson County was published by the Henderson County Historical Society in 1988. A limited number of copies of this book are being offered at a special sale price of $12.00. Books can be purchased at the Henderson County Library and at the Horse and Buggy Museum.

Historic photos of Henderson County can be found at the Henderson County Museum in Raritan. There are photographs from every town and villege. There is a particularly interesting set of photos of the 72 one room schools that were in the county in the early 1900s. The Historic society has included most of these photos on an 18 month calendar which is being sold for $10.00.

There is a Genealogy room in the Henderson County Library that is worth a trip. If you are interested in old plat maps going back to 1868, visit the genealogy room. If you are interested in the 42 pioneer cemetaries, Visit the genealogy room.

HISTORIC STRUCTURES STILL STANDING-------HISTORIC STRUCTURES STILL STANDING
If you like historic structures, you can find many in the county. There is a self guded auto tour book in the making. For now, the Heritage trail map is the best we have to offer. These maps are available at the Horse and Buggy Museum in Biggsville. The following are some of these structures:

Alexis Phelps House
The Alexis Phelps House was built in 1833 by Alexis Phelps who was a fur trader with the Sac and Fox Indians. The house was restored by Henderson County Historical Society, and is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Open by appointment for breakfast, teas, luncheons, and receptions. Great place to relax ans view the Mississippi River.

Covered Bridge
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Historic covered wooden bridge built in 1866.

Lock and Ddam 18
Located on the senic Mississippi River. Constructed in 1934. Good place to watch Bald Eagles or fish for walleye.

Weir Fruit Farm
Started in 1884 as the Oak Grove Fruit Farm. A Centenial Business. Great place to get apples and see a Museum during the apple season.
